HypnoBirthing is a complete antenatal course enabling you to use self-hypnosis to achieve the comfortable, stress-free birth that nature intended. Whether you are planning to have baby at home, in hospital or in a midwifery-led unit, HypnoBirthing can help you experience an enjoyable birth.

Where does HypnoBirthing come from?

It was developed by Marie Mongan, an American lady who, in the 1950s at a time when birth had become taken over by doctors to such an extent that babies were routinely delivered by forceps to anaesthetised mothers, passionately believed that birth should, and could be an entirely different experience: a natural, joyful event. She found clear evidence to support this belief in the teachings of a British doctor, Grantley Dick-Read who as long ago as the 1930s had written a book: 'Childbirth without Fear'.

Struck by the contrast between the difficult, painful labours endured by the rich clients who could afford a hospital birth and the quiet, peaceful births he witnessed in very poor homes, he wondered what it was that the poorer women had that made childbirth so much easier. Eventually he realised it was what they didn't have that made the difference: FEAR. He understood how the traditional methods of delivering babies, with their emphasis on induction and anaesthetics, were largely responsible for this climate of fear and so developed an ante-natal programme enabling pregnant women to banish fear and enjoy the natural labour nature intended.

This then was the starting point for Marie Mongan to embark on an ante-natal course that combines an understanding of the birthing process with techniques for deep relaxation that enable birthing to unfold in its own time. She used it first for herself, then for her grown up pregnant daughters; today it is being used by thousands of women throughout the world.

With antenatal classes in HypnoBirthing, you will learn to call upon your body's own natural relaxants, and thereby lessen or eliminate discomfort or pain- and the consequent need for drugs and medication.
